Efficacy of Aromatherapy - To Reduce Behavioral and Psychological Disturbances in People With Dementia

Behavioral and psychological disturbances in residents with dementia pose a challenge to healthcare workers when delivering quality patient care. Facilities who implement programs that utilize a variety of non-pharmacologic interventions for behavioral management of their residents, have more tools in their toolbox for supporting these residents.

A JAMDA Study published in November 2024 provided a review of outcomes from several randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effectiveness of aromatherapy in reducing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). This analysis revealed a correlation between consistent use of aromatherapy over 3-4 weeks and a reduction in BPSD, especially when used in conjunction with massage.

The use of aromatherapy is not burdened by the need for extensive training and has minimal costs associated with use. We hope these findings are useful to supplement your existing dementia-related behavior reduction program!
