Social Isolation and Loneliness
The COVID-19 Pandemic highlighted the need to better understand the impacts that social isolation and feelings of loneliness had on residents living in nursing homes. Newer research reveals the extent of these negative impacts, leading to a significant increase in a person’s risk of premature death from all causes. Data has shown that loneliness and social isolation can result in a 50% increased risk of dementia and approximately 30% increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Beyond the effects on mortality, the rise in rates of depression and anxiety alone warrants the focus of more resources toward addressing social isolation and loneliness in Nursing Homes.
